Detox time!

Finally back home! I’m not saying i didn’t enjoy my time abroad, but after a while we all want our own bed and our own food!

I had an amazing culinary experience in the south of France..Make that multi amazing culinary experiences! I admit i went over the top with food and wine, but hey, how many times am i going to experience that?!

Amazing raviolini and creme sauce with floer decorations!

Even coffee comes with a side dish of sweets! It's called cafe gourmand mmm

Even coffee comes with a side dish of sweets! It’s called “Cafe Gourmand” mmm

These are just a fraction of what i ate!! Yes, i love food, and i enjoy it. So i enjoyed it 🙂 I didn’t even go on the scale to see the damage done, because i have no regrets!

But now it’s time for detox! And by detox i don’t mean a week of juice cleanse (i just can’t do it!). By detox i mean eating all the foods my body is used to normally; plenty of vegetables and fruits, breakfast of yogurt and berries, snacks of nuts and fruits. No pasta, meat or creamy food. Just simple wholesome meals that will bring my insides to what they were!

My whole diet is very simple and easy. It’s ok to indulge like i did, but it’s always a pleasure to come back to my normal discipline. Because the Mediterranean diet is not strict, and is full of options! When you get used to it you will see how easy it is to adjust what you eat to your way of life.

A trip to the grocery store filled up my fridge with what i’m used to (see here ), and i’m excited to start cooking again!

Today we will have a simple lentil salad (recipe ), with some grilled zucchini with pesto sauce…Heaven!

What do you do when you over eat on a trip?

A Mediterranean city..

Every country on the Mediterranean has its charm, its food, and its traditions. What they all share is the sun, sea, and blue blue sky..

Today i’m writing from the south of France, Cannes to be more precise, where i will be staying for a week, till the end of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival.

The south of France brings already good food to the mind, extremely good wine, walks on the beautiful beaches, and long nights filled with the sweet smell of the south..

It was too cold for me, but not for the sun lovers!

What if you add an international film festival to all that? You get Cannes!

Cannes is a very beautiful city on the sea side, filled with more cafes than you can count, little restaurants, seafood places, beautiful hotels, and of course for the fashionistas, plenty of shopping to do!

I love Cannes during the festival; it’s full of people from around the world, industry people, movie affectionnados, fans, tourists, journalists…All mingling together.

You see couples in black tie and long evening dresses walking next to people in shorts and flip flops!

The french city turns inside out for this event, and it is something to see!

Small kitchens

I always loved to have a huge kitchen, with an island, stools, two sinks, lots and lots of cabinets…right? Well i haven’t been so lucky yet, maybe one day!

I have had a medium kitchen, then a tiny kitchen that i loved, all gray and industrial looking, and here in Montreal i have an average kitchen that my husband and i repainted in dark gray a couple of years ago, accented with chrome appliances and open shelves.

I truly believe that the kitchen is the heart of the home, where secrets are whispered, dramas unfold, laughter and celebration happen. And i realized that the size of the room doesn’t matter. Big or small, it’s still the heart of your home.

I have cooked more in my tiny kitchen than in all the other ones! Women are very resourceful, we make amazing things in any kitchen, agree?

Here are some examples of small sized kitchen that you will love!

Color is always good. A bright color can add zest to any space!

Lower cabinets in dark gray and open shelving in white gives the impression of a wider space..

A tiny space, lovely floors, and cabinets from top to bottom..

An all white kitchen accentuated with splashes of colors, and a wallpapered backsplash..

What is your kitchen like?

Protect your skin!

We are at the beginning of May, the beginning of spring. Being here, on the Mediterranean, looking at the sea, feeling the hot sun on my face (it’s 30 degrees C!), i wonder how people will survive the summer heat…

Didn’t we all at one point or another just lay down in the sun this way?

Living on the Mediterranean for almost 35 years, i indulged (a bit too much) in sun basking from morning till the sun went down. I used to sit in the sun , without protection, just enjoying being baked and happy with my lobster face!

After reaching 30 i finally listened to my mom and began putting sunscreen on my face. Now even my day cream has 30 SPF, even though most of the time there is no sun. Is it too late? I don’t know, but at least i began protecting my skin!

-Do you know that even at low-level exposures, UVA light breaks down collagen, which causes wrinkles?

-What is sunscreen? Sunscreen is a pharmaceutical product designed to protect skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation.

-When worn daily, sunscreens help shield important protein like collagen, elastin and keratin, which keep skin firm and smooth.

-Sunscreen lotions may be quite effective in preventing all kinds of skin cancer, as well as melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.

When i was younger, i always thought that wearing sunscreen would prevent me from having any color, but even with an SPF as high as 50 i usually end up quite tanned.

So to all women out there, want a beautiful skin for longer. want to protect your skin from sun damages? Wear sunscreen today!

How to enjoy candles in your home

Hello beautiful Ladies, first off a huge thank you to all of you for following my blog and my Facebook page!

The best feeling for a blogger is to be read, and i love feedback from you!

Today i will be sharing something quite different than health and beauty, but i think you will like it because we are all women and we love our home.

My passion for interiors is how i began blogging in the first place, and i will be posting from time to time some tips on how to enjoy your surroundings and make your home a more beautiful place to be! Because home is where our day begins and ends, where joyful moments happen, where major crisis happen!

I love candles, i find their light soothing (it makes us look better!), magical, festive, and very spiritual in a way (my mother always lights a candle for my kids when they have exams!).

Group them together for more impact

Is it your time to change?

Come spring, we all feel energized and ready for a bright and sunny season. In many countries, Canada included, spring seems still so far away!

But i felt like i needed a change (we are in april!), so i went and cut all my hair off, bought me some bright lipstick and i feel already rejuvenated!

To be honest, i don’t know if chopping my hair off was such a great idea (at 16 it looks cool, at 42…), one of my daughters sent me crying faces when she saw my picture, and my mom hasn’t seen me yet (she’s a big fan of “feminity lies in the hair” thing)! But, i needed the change, and it’s only hair, so here i am!

Other changes would be adding some flowers to your home, bright colorful flowers that bring the outdoor inside your house.

As i mentioned here , flowers alter your mood and make you happy!

In mediterranean countries, they celebrate spring by taking advantage of all the new produce of the season, and cooking different dishes with different vegetables.

Sadly here, it’s a bit too early for that, but we still can cheat, by cooking lighter meals, using the produce at hand in different ways; i always have lemon in my fridge, and i believe that there is nothing like a squirt of lemon juice to brighten up a dish! My mother has always a dressing she makes ready in the fridge:

Lemon juice, olive oil, crushed garlic, salt and pepper, and a dash of tabasco. It’s great on salads, broccoli, cauliflower, grilled zuchini…Works with almost anything!

What are your plans for spring changes?

10 tips on how to stay healthy “a la mediterranean”

1- Eat a healthy breakfast (i confess i don’t do it often enough), but eating in the morning refuels your body after a night’s sleep.

2- Eat colorful: the more colors you have in your plate, the more nutrients you are feeding your body.

3- Get moving: walk, jog, exercise, whatever motivates you. Daily.

4- Include whole grains and fiber in your diet.

5- Choose healthy snack: almonds, dates, hummus dip, yogurt with some chia seeds….

6- Drink more water: it keeps you energized, keeps your skin hydrated and regulates almost all the functions of your body.

7- Take some quiet time for yourself: sort of a mini meditation if you like!

8- Spend time with loved ones: enjoy your “relax time” and let go of the daily stress.

9- Get a good night sleep.

10- Remember: everything in moderation!

Family dinners = Happiness

The Mediterranean life style isn’t all about the diet. It’s a way of life; living on the Mediterranean for so long, you take everything for granted. The food, the sun, the relaxed attitude, family and health.

The things I miss the most are my family and the sun. I didn’t need vitamin D supplements that’s for sure! As for family, they are the core of your being. And that’s part of what the mediterranean lifestyle is all about. Enjoying your time with loved ones, having never ending meals together , free therapy (that’s what family does for you!)…

This is why I always stress on having meals with your loved ones, be it your spouse, your kids, or your extended family. Being in a relaxed and happy atmosphere can help decrease the risk of  depression and other diseases, and make for a healthier and happier family.

The simple act of gathering your family around the table may make more of a difference than you ever thought.

-Studies have shown that teens who eat with their family have lower rates of depression.

-Frequent family meals are associated with a lower risk of smoking, drinking and using drugs.

-Family dinners helps keep family members updated on each others lives, and creates stronger bonds.

-Family dinners help lower obesity rates and eating disorders in kids and teens.

-When kids eat at home with their family, they eat healthier, therefore there is less room for bad habits to form.

Make time. I know it’s not easy when you are struggling with scheduals, PTA, work, laundry! But try it at least once and see the difference in everyone in your family. Stress on having at least one meal a day all together, where each member can talk freely and share his latest news. Let your mind relax for a while , enjoy the moment and enjoy your family.

Why drink lemon water?

Lemons are abundant on the mediterranean. We use a lot of lemon in our food and in our everyday life. As it turns out, lemons can be found everywhere and we can benefit from them wherever we are!

Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C. It contains vitamin B, and minerals like calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, as well as proteins and carbohydrates.

I do a cure of lemon water every 2-3 months, for a period of 1 month, and i have to say, my skin looks way better!

Lemon water is a healthy drink, specially if taken in the morning. Daily consumption provides a number of benefits:

Good for the stomach: by drinking lemon water regularly, the bowels are aided in eliminating waste more efficiently.

Excellent for skin care: lemon is a vitamin C rich fruit that enhances your beauty, by rejuvenating skin from within. Daily consumption of lemon water can make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin; it acts as anti-aging and can remove wrinkles and blackheads.

Dental care: it relieves from bad smell and other problems related to gums.

Cures throat infection: it has anti-bacterial properties, therefore aids in fighting throat infections, sore throat and tonsillitis.

Good for weight loss: one of the major benefits of lemon water is that it acts as a great weight loss remedy.

Controls high blood pressure: controls also dizziness and nausea. it also reduces mental stress and depression.

Reduces fever: lemon water can treat a person suffering from cold, fever or flu.

Acts as blood purifier: diseases like cholera and malaria can be treated with lemon water as it acts as a blood purifier.

Try drinking a cup of warm water with lemon in the morning, for a month, and see the results yourself!

It’s very simple; a cup of warm water and the juice of half a lemon. DO IT.
