Monday question

Desktop97Hello again to another week and another question!

Today is all about health, and how you go about being or trying to be healthy. As you well know the Mediterranean diet is not new to me, i have been brought up by it. But of course, we always get tempted by fries, ice cream, sodas or other unhealthy foods…To tell you the honest truth i never turned down an ice cream in my life! And if i could eat two , one after the other i wouldn’t say no!

Why do i want healthy food for myself and my family? Because i want to avoid as much as i can illnesses, diseases, i want to live longer and not to arrive at a certain age where i have to rely on someone to eat or go to the bathroom!

I want my kids to live without fear of obesity and everything that comes with it.

But at the same time i want to enjoy life, and i want my kids to enjoy what life offers us. So i found a balance; most of our days are filled with healthy, natural good food, some exercise, and of course fun! We have the occasional “junk” day, knowing very well that the next day is going to be a healthy one..It worked for me until now, and hopefully will always work. That’s my Mediterranean diet!

What about you? How do you go about trying to be healthy?

Detox time!

Finally back home! I’m not saying i didn’t enjoy my time abroad, but after a while we all want our own bed and our own food!

I had an amazing culinary experience in the south of France..Make that multi amazing culinary experiences! I admit i went over the top with food and wine, but hey, how many times am i going to experience that?!

Amazing raviolini and creme sauce with floer decorations!

The best cheese cake ever!

Even coffee comes with a side dish of sweets! It's called cafe gourmand mmm

Even coffee comes with a side dish of sweets! It’s called “Cafe Gourmand” mmm

These are just a fraction of what i ate!! Yes, i love food, and i enjoy it. So i enjoyed it 🙂 I didn’t even go on the scale to see the damage done, because i have no regrets!

But now it’s time for detox! And by detox i don’t mean a week of juice cleanse (i just can’t do it!). By detox i mean eating all the foods my body is used to normally; plenty of vegetables and fruits, breakfast of yogurt and berries, snacks of nuts and fruits. No pasta, meat or creamy food. Just simple wholesome meals that will bring my insides to what they were!

My whole diet is very simple and easy. It’s ok to indulge like i did, but it’s always a pleasure to come back to my normal discipline. Because the Mediterranean diet is not strict, and is full of options! When you get used to it you will see how easy it is to adjust what you eat to your way of life.

A trip to the grocery store filled up my fridge with what i’m used to (see here ), and i’m excited to start cooking again!

Today we will have a simple lentil salad (recipe ), with some grilled zucchini with pesto sauce…Heaven!

What do you do when you over eat on a trip?

The mediterranean diet, star of the week!

If you have been living under a rock these past few days and haven’t heard, the Mediterranean diet has been all over the news this week!

A new study has confirmed that following the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of strokes and other cardiovascular diseases.

Following the diet, enjoying life, changing your lifestyle to a healthier one, can actually be your ticket to a longer and healthier life!

“This study backs up what we thought we knew with science, and the results were pretty dramatic,” said Dr. Rita Redberg, a UCSF cardiologist specializing in heart disease in women. “If this were a pill, people would be clamoring for it.” Read more here

“The quality of fat in the Mediterranean diet is very good,” he told Reuters Health. “This good source of calories is replacing other bad sources of calories. In addition, there is a wide variety of plant foods in the Mediterranean diet,” he added, including legumes and fruits as desserts. Read more here

“Martinez-Gonzalez says people wanting to move toward such a diet should start with small changes, such as not eating meat on two days a week, move to using olive oil for cooking, and replacing hard alcohol with red wine, and drinking it only at mealtimes.”  Read more here

“Now along comes this group and does a gigantic study in Spain that says you can eat a nicely balanced diet with fruits and vegetables and olive oil and lower heart disease by 30 percent,” he said. “And you can actually enjoy life.”  Read more here

“The diet is high in fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts, whole grains and ‘healthy’ fats such as those in olive oil, while low in red meat and dairy products”. Read more here

There you have it, all the proof you need! The mediterranean diet is the answer. A little bit of changes one step at a time…

Hello and welcome to OliveLifestyle!
What is OliveLifestyle you would ask yourself, and why should you follow it? Well let me tell you a bit about myself and my lifestyle..

I am 42 years old, a mother of 4 beautiful children, of Mediterranean descent (Italian and Lebanese), and living newly in Canada. Yes it is a long way from the warm sun, blue sea and the slow pace!

Having lived almost all my life on the Mediterranean, moving to North America was a kind of culture shock; the eating habits, the lifestyle, the traditions….Don’t get me wrong, I love it, and I think Canadians are the nicest people by far, but it’s the total opposite of what I was used to.

People tell me I look 10 years younger than my age, why? Because of my lifestyle, my diet, and my outlook on life. That is what I will be sharing with you (and a few of my Italian mamma’s recipes!), tips on how to stay healthy, young looking and full of energy, tips on beauty, enjoying your home, slowing down and enjoying being yourself!

Healthy weight, a long life, and a happy disposition; sounds like a pretty good package, huh? According to newly published research, the key to all three may be as simple as following a Mediterranean diet.

We all know that eating healthy prevents diseases, offers you a longer and healthier life. Why are there so many obese and overweight people in America? It’s due to their diet, their meal size, their activity habits, and of course the media influence that promotes all these fast , frozen foods that you think will make your life easier!

What I learned living here in Canada, is that you don’t have to live on the Mediterranean to live the Mediterranean life, if I can do it, for sure you can do it!

We will have videos, how to’s, interviews with specialists, and a lot more! So stay tuned, and enjoy this easy guide to adopting a healthy Mediterranean lifestyle!
